What is a family session like?

Listen, I know that, family photo sessions have a bad rap. I have three kids. I get it.

But hear me out. I think there’s another way. There’s hope that having beautiful photos taken of your family can be painless. And dare I say…fun!?

Take this session, for example. We spent our time together exploring, walking through the woods, playing and having fun. The kids were allowed to be kids and, gasp, even get a little dirty! There was much laughing and snuggling. In my opinion, it was perfect.

Now, is everyone saying “Cheese!” and smiling at the camera? No.

Is everyone posed perfectly? Again, no.

But did we capture this season of life for this family of five? Yes!

Did the kids have fun and everyone end the session in a happy mood? Yes!

Most importantly, did we capture beautiful pictures that tell the story of their love and connection? YES!

And, to me, that’s exactly what a family photo session should be like.

Does that mean every family should traipse through the woods for their session? Heck no. Is your family more comfortable walking around Dickson Street? Or hanging out at the library? Or a local park that your kids love? A specific location isn’t the priority - finding space for your family to be themselves and enjoy each other is!

Should every family dress up for their photos? Again, heck no! For my family’s last photos, we wore jeans, tee shirts and sneakers! Because that’s who we are! Does your family feel it’s best in your fancy church clothes? Then wear those! (But only if your kids can still be kids while they’re in their fancy clothes! Uncomfortable kids aren’t happy to get their photos taken!)

For me, truly beautiful family photos capture more than just “Cheese!” smiles. They capture this season of life. They capture love and connection. They capture family.
